A Javier Hernandez goal with just minutes to play once again saved Manchester United, this time in a thrilling 4-3 win over Newcastle that extended the Red Devils’ Premier League lead to seven points.
Manchester United fell behind three times at home to Newcastle, which hasn’t won away to the Red Devils since 1972. But each time the home side fought back, with Mexican Hernandez playing a large role alongside Robin Van Persie in attack.
Hernandez, who played the full 90, was thwarted on several occasions before his game winner, a cool finish off a Michael Carrick feed with time running out.
The victory lifted the Red Devils a full seven points clear of second place Manchester City, after the cross town rival dropped its Boxing Day match at Sunderland.
